Guides such as Mila, Mr. Hong, and Sunny are noted for clear explanations and helpful local tips.

“We enjoyed this trip overall. The trip to the thermal area was great although several of the paths were closed because of the weather. The snowmobile ride was very expensive, and I'm not convinced it was worth it. It was very cold and we could only go slowly. Because of the heavy snow, you couldn't see Lake Toya anyway. Our guide was very loud and spoke at high speed, barely taking a breath. She said everything in English and then Japanese with no pause between. She showed photos on her phone and we were at the back of the bus so had no way of seeing them. She did eventually…”

Sapporo: Hokkaido, Noboribetsu and Lake Toya Day Tour

4.Hokkaido, Noboribetsu and Lake Toya Day Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.1 · 88 reviews · from $66

Travel from Sapporo through Hokkaido’s volcanic country with an English or Japanese guide. Visit Noboribetsu Hell Valley, Lake Toya, Showa Shinzan Bear Farm, and seasonal scenic stops. Lisa has guided some departures, earning praise for clear directions and friendly help. Lunch, admissions, and extra shopping are not included.

“The destinations are great, and you get a good overview of the region. But: The tour was mostly in Chinese. The English explanation was pretty short and seemed like it was memorized. We couldn't answer any questions. One of the stops was the so-called 'Bear Ranch'. The name is totally misleading, as it was a cruel, narrow concrete hole with bears. In short, if you're just looking for 'photo spots,' you might be happy. I wouldn't recommend the tour, though.”
